KidsPlay Children's Museum is a destination for families located in the heart of downtown Torrington. KidsPlay offers interactive, hands-on exhibits where children age 1 to 10 practice pre-academic skills, build curiosity and explore through developmental play. The Museum provides opportunities for informal family learning and presents learning concepts in fun ways that are meaningful and accessible to children. Stretched across Connecticut's shoreline, this National Wildlife Refuge was the first Federally-owned conservation land in the state when it was established in 1972. First known as Salt Meadow National Wildlife Refuge, it was renamed in 1987 to honor the late U.S. Congressman Stewart B. McKinney, who was a great champion of the refuge’s expansion. Today the refuge is comprised of eleven units that span 70 miles of Connecticut coastline. Bushnell Park is the oldest publicly funded park in the United States. It was conceived by the Reverend Horace Bushnell in 1854 at the time when the need for open public spaces was just beginning to be recognized. Reverend Bushnell asked his good friend and Hartford native Frederick Law Olmsted to design the park, but at the time, Olmsted was designing New York's Central Park and recommended Jacob Weidenmann, a Swiss-born landscape architiect. Weidenmann's plan for the park included graceful paths and clusters of trees and enhance the presence of the Park River which flowed through the park
