The trail system makes a wide loop around the eastern portion of the park. An attractive park which contains many interesting features, chief among which are the many moss-covered ledge rocks.

The Town Forest is Wilton's largest open space park. It is also the most rugged. In the northeast corner is the waterfalls know as Sheep Falls. Most of the forest supports deciduous hardwoods, there are two areas within the center of the park where small hemlock groves are present. These two areas provide a pleasing contrast to the deciduous woods. A bubbling stream known as Barrett's Brook flows in a southwesterly direction through the Town Forest from Sheep Falls to Branch Brook Road. Horseback riding is permitted on designated bridle trails. The Carriage Barn Arts Center is home to the New Canaan Society for the Arts, Inc., a not-for-profit organization. The Center is located in Waveny Park in a 19th century stone barn, refurbished as a gallery and performing arts venue. Our mission is to support the work of local and regional artists, and to maintain the Carriage Barn as a cultural arts center in New Canaan, open to all members of our surrounding community and everyone who is interested in the arts.

The trail leads north through a grove of crab apple trees (bloom in May/June) into a meadow (wildflowers all summer long). You can either walk south through the field or west across the field to a wide area of the river (pond). The trail goes south along the river to the 'stonebridge," where stepping stones are set on top of a low dam. Across the river, the path loops to the north and then down the river to Stonebridge Road. Here you can either cross a wooden bridge and return to the parking area or cross Stonebridge Road to the southern portion of the sanctuary. The southern portion is

Comprised of two parcels, one of which is protected by a conservation easement and the second one having been purchased outright. It is this second parcel that trails have been developed on. The 16-acre parcel was purchased at a generouse below market price from the estate of Caroline B. Rice in the spring of 2001. The features valued by the town and state largely rest on the dense forested hillside and its relationshop to Bryant's Brook in the valley below. The main trail system leads visitors in a loop around the island. There is also a side trail that parallels the Norwalk River. Clearings made along the river provide excellent sites for fishing, picnicking or relaxing by the water's edge. The eastern portion of the main loop trail passes through an upland area that is in a mid-successional stage. Schenck's Island is an oasis in a densely developed park of Wilton.
