The man-made fresh water lake is open to swimmers in a designated area with lifeguards. The large beach is sandy and sunny. There's little natural shade. Parking is free, but a fee is charged at the gate to enter the swimming area from Memorial Day (Saturday) to Labor Day.

Artifacts found at the north end of the lake indicate that the Nipmuc Indians resided here and called the lake Wabbaquasset, meaning "place where cattails grow." The beach is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing and watching sunsets. A beach pass is required to access the beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
