In 2003, the farm planted a field of sunflowers so that visitors coming for ice cream could enjoy the rural beauty of Connecticut. This eventually led to the ice cream stand's now famous Sunflowers for Wishes fundraiser. During a week in June, Buttonwood Farm cuts sunflower bouquets to sell, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut, a non-profit organization devoted to making wishes possible for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Due to the success of Sunflowers for Wishes, Buttonwood Farm now plants 14 acres of sunflowers, with people coming from across New England to capture the moment.
