YiaYia’s owners Yanni and Kaitlyn Gogo met several years ago in Astoria, New York while working together at an upscale event space. Not too long after they fell in love, married, had a child, and relocated to Torrington, Connecticut. Yanni worked for a few years as a General Manager in a popular eatery nearby. They then acquired the summer contract to operate the Lakeridge Café, and had several successful seasons. They built up a name and reputation in the area for serving fresh, high quality food. Finally they realized there was nothing left to do but open their own small restaurant, perhaps closer to New York where they had friends and family. But life threw them a curveball. YiaYia got sick. Most of their saving for their dream restaurant and moving expenses went to help pay for chemo and radiation. YiaYia made a miraculous recovery and is officially cancer free. However moving closer to home was no longer an option. They thought long and hard about what they could bring to the community that no one else could. What did this town really need? An authentic Greek Taverna they decided it would have to be. They created a small menu of YiaYias most famous recipes. renovated an old Internet cafe and transformed it into a Greek Island. In keeping with Greek tradition, all of the food would all be made fresh everyday. YiaYias’s Greek Kitchen is a love letter to Greece as well as our beloved mother Lida Gogo also known as YiaYia.
