The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Museum presents a varied and diverse array of arts programming on more than 300 days throughout the year in its 285-seat theater with state-of-the-art light and sound capabilities. The Kate hosts national and international touring acts, such as Judy Collins, Peter Wolf, Martin Barre, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, as well as local artists and other non-profit performing groups. More than 45,000 adults and children cross its threshold each year to enjoy live theater, music, film, dance, the MET in HD and Bolshoi Ballet simulcasts, comedy, family programs and much more.
The Katharine Hepburn Museum offers an authentic view of the cultural and historic impact of Miss Hepburn and her family through multi-media exhibits that feature personal letters and memorabilia, as well as objects from her Hollywood and stage career. The Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and one hour prior to performances. Admission is FREE, however, donations are gratefully accepted. A Museum Gift Shop includes several Katharine Hepburn items and general 'the Kate' apparel and gifts.
The Kate also offers arts education programs for children and youth through Kate's Camp for Kids and Missoula Children's Theatre. The Kate has been recognized as Yankee Magazine’s “Best Small Theater in Connecticut” in 2014 and in Connecticut Magazine as the “Best Small Concert Venue” in the state. It's home at 300 Main Street in Old Saybrook is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was originally opened in 1911 with a theatre on the upper two floors and a few town offices on the ground floor. Known as the Town Hall at the time, the building has always been the center of cultural activities in Old Saybrook.
