Step back in time through an exploration of one of the oldest homes in Essex and its reproduction barn, gardens, and museum shop.  Owned, operated, and maintained by Essex Historical Society (EHS), this property at 19 West Avenue is a true gem for the town as it features the only representation of early Essex domestic life.  A minutes walk from the shopping center of Main Street Essex Village, this house is a must visit on your weekend getaway.

The original block of the house was built in 1701 by the grandson of one of Essex’s three first settlers, Lieutenant William Pratt, this building housed members of the Pratt family - including nine generations of blacksmiths - for over three centuries.  Period furnishings fill the home, providing visitors with an intimate look at the kinds of everyday objects that would have filled many homes found in our local area. Of special note are the beautiful iron door-latches, cooking utensils and fireplace tools that were forged by one or more of the Pratt blacksmiths.

In addition to rooms staged as a historic home, the property features two exhibit spaces that feature rotating exhibits from EHS Collections.

The Pratt House grounds boast nearly 2 acres of green space that we invite you to enjoy.  During the summer we feature rotating sculpture artists. Picnic tables onsite are for public use and enjoyment.  Please clean up after yourselves and your four-legged friends.

During the season Essex Historical Society hosts many events at Pratt House including open air painting days, the Connecticut Sea Music Festival, youth programs, morning yoga, and more. Visit essexhistory.org for all upcoming events!
