Cockaponset State Forest

Natchaug State Forest

The name Natchaug means "land between the rivers" and refers to the land at the junction of the Bigelow and Still Rivers which join to form the Natchaug River. The forest is popular for its horse trails, outstanding fishing, and riverfront picnic sites. Of historic interest is a large stone fireplace and chimney that are the remains of the birthplace of General Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union General killed in the Civil War. Activities include backpack camping, cross country skiing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, horse camping, hunting, mountain biking, picnicking, and snowmobiling.

Mohawk State Forest

From atop the 1,683-foot Mohawk Mountain, the view is literally forever on a clear day. At Mohawk State Forest, visitors can hike the rugged hills of the wildlife sanctuary or explore the black spruce bog, long recognized as a unique natural area. Both stream and pond fishing are popular within the forest and ten miles of trails are devoted to snowmobiles when the snow is six inches deep or more. Mansfield Hollow State Park

The daming of the Natchaug River by the Army Corrps of Engineers has created a 500-acre lake for boating and fishing. No swimming is allowed. Enjoy an afternoon of fishing or take in the water views from one of the several trails. Other amenities: Picnicking

Selden Neck State Park

This island park is accessible only from the water. Formerly home to a farm and a stone quarry, it was cut off the spring of 1854. The campground offers four primitive camp areas with outhouses, picnic tables, and pit fireplaces. Other activities include bird watching, fishing, hiking and hunting. Other amenities: Picnicking

H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut

Non-profit rescue organization offers daily tours to visit the horses. Run by volunteers, we care for 25-30 horses at a time, and are always looking for volunteers, sponsors and adopters. Call ahead for a noontime tour. Tour time: 1 hour
