The Second City ~ 65th Anniversary Show

Rooted in the innovative improvisational games of Viola Spolin, The Second City made its debut on a snowy night in December 1959, marking the beginning of a comedy revolution. What started as a small cabaret theater in Chicago has evolved into the most influential and prolific comedy empire in the world, establishing a unique approach to creating art that has nurtured generation after generation of comedic superstars.

The Second City was co-founded by Paul Sills, the son of Viola Spolin, alongside Howard Alk and Bernie Sahlins. The theater quickly gained a reputation for its experimental and unconventional approach to both theater and comedy. Almost immediately, it became a launching pad for a host of notable comedians and actors, including Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Fred Willard, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi. Their talents propelled The Second City into the international spotlight, showcasing the theater’s unique brand of humor and improvisation.

In 1976, The Second City expanded its influence with the launch of “SCTV,” a sketch comedy series that has since been recognized as one of the greatest of all time. This two-time Emmy-winning show featured an all-star cast, including Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty, and Rick Moranis, further solidifying The Second City’s legacy in the world of comedy.

Today, The Second City operates as a world-class entertainment company with locations in Chicago, Toronto, and Hollywood, entertaining over one million audience members each year. The theater continues to produce top-tier talent, with alumni such as Steve Carell, Keegan-Michael Key, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Chris Farley, and Mike Myers leaving their mark across film, television, and beyond.

In addition to its performances, The Second City Touring Companies deliver electrifying revues and original productions throughout North America and internationally. The theater’s creative collaborations have led to thrilling and critically acclaimed work with prestigious organizations, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Norwegian Cruise Line, the New York Comedy Festival, and the Chicago Bulls.

The Second City Training Centers in Chicago, Toronto, Hollywood, and online provide comedy education to thousands of students each year. The opening of the Harold Ramis Film School in 2016 marked a significant milestone, as it became the first film school dedicated to comedy. Additionally, Second City Works is a leader in applying improvisational methodologies to businesses and organizations across various sectors.

As we continue to celebrate this legacy, we invite you to enjoy the show—after all, it has been nearly 60 years in the making.
