Nature Writing Retreat at Great Mountain Forest
This August, the woods of northwestern Connecticut will transform into a living classroom for writers seeking inspiration from one of New England’s most storied landscapes. From August 7–9, 2026, Great Mountain Forest (GMF) will host its First Annual Nature Writing Retreat at the historic Yale Camp in Falls Village. This immersive three-day retreat invites writers of all levels to reflect on the life and legacy of prolific writer, longtime New York Times nature columnist, and outdoorsman Hal Borland, who wrote about this very landscape. The retreat will consist of a series of six carefully curated workshops led by award winning authors and experts in the field. Through a blend of field observation, reflective writing, and intellectual discussion, attendees will engage not only with language — but with the land itself. Participants will have the opportunity to submit work developed during the retreat to an online anthology, to be published this fall. Meals and refreshments are included, and optional camp-style accommodations are available. Early bird registration is through May 31, and the registration deadline is July 24. Requests for the Student discount may be made via email. Enrollment is limited to foster engagement between presenters and attendees.
