Museum Reopens - Chocolate and Unmentionables
Willimantic’s Textile and History Museum (the Mill Museum) will reopen Saturday, February 7, after its annual
January closure. As in previous years, the reopening coincides with the Romantic Willimantic Chocolate
Festival. As part of that cherished tradition, chocolate treats and hot cocoa will be given to museum visitors
that day.
Also opening February 7 is Unmentionables: Undergarments of the 19th Century and the Women Who Wore
Them.
The numerous undergarments women were expected to wear in this era could be cumbersome, especially by modern standards. Both garments and wearers were expected to maintain a certain level of decorum and sensuality while also being relatively practical. The exhibit also highlights the differences
between undergarments worn by the middle and working classes.
