Maple Day 2026: Live Maple Sugaring & Colonial Demonstrations at Stanley-Whitman House
Celebrate the sweet arrival of spring at Stanley-Whitman House’s annual Maple Day on Saturday, March 7, from 12:00–4:00 PM.
This long-standing seasonal tradition invites visitors to gather in the museum yard for live maple sugaring demonstrations with historic interpreter Dennis Picard. Throughout the afternoon, sap will be boiled in kettles over a wood fire, demonstrating traditional New England techniques and sharing the history behind this enduring ritual. Outdoor demonstrations are ongoing and free to attend.
Inside the museum, guests may explore the historic 18th-century house on guided tours (admission required), participate in family activities in the Spear Classroom and Whitman Tavern, and view Roots & Reflections, an exhibition of paintings by Rachel and John O’Shaughnessy inspired by the Farmington River. Created over several visits to the area in recent years, these works reflect close observation of the river’s changing light, landscape, and atmosphere.
The museum store will be open with books, artisan goods, and locally sourced maple syrup available for purchase.
Drop in anytime between 12–4 PM, or register in advance to let us know you’re coming. Most activities take place outdoors — please dress appropriately. A live fire will be in use for demonstrations, and staff will be on hand to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
