book tickets now learn more

Join us for the return of “Getting” Contemporary Art, a mini art history class series, this fall delving into the current exhibition, The Aldrich Decennial: I am what is around me. Through close looking, conversation, and connections to art history, literature, and contemporary culture, participants will engage with selected works in the exhibition while developing new approaches to experiencing contemporary art. Each session focuses on a different theme and may be taken individually or as a series.

Register for the full three-class series, or a single class!

“Getting” Contemporary Art is led by Kristen Erickson, art history teacher and Director of the Luchsinger Gallery at Greenwich Academy.

Class Schedule
Tuesday, September 15: Cultural Legacies / Journeys / Identity / Displacement

How do place, memory, and cultural heritage shape artistic practice? Through discussion and close looking, this session explores how artists transform personal histories, migration, and lived experience into powerful works of contemporary art.

Tuesday, September 22: Domesticity and Memory / Heirlooms

What stories do the objects and spaces around us tell? This class examines how contemporary artists use ideas of home, memory, and everyday life to reflect on identity, history, family, and the ways we inhabit the world.

Tuesday, September 29: "Gorgeous Nothings" - Decennial Artists and Literary Connections

Many artists in the Decennial draw inspiration from poetry, fiction, and storytelling. Through close looking and selected readings, this session considers the rich dialogue between literature and visual art and how artists translate language into images, ideas, and experience.
