City of Floating Sounds

Experience the sights and sounds of New Haven in a whole new way! Join us for a magical, musical journey through our city that culminates in a live concert on the New Haven Green. The International Festival of Arts & Ideas, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and Yale Schwarzman Center present City of Floating Sounds, an immersive musical experience that celebrates New Haven’s rich history and culture.

The evening begins at 6pm with a 30-minute walk through New Haven, during which you will hear - and are encouraged to play aloud - a segment of Huang Ruo’s City of Floating Sounds on your smartphone. You will have six routes to choose from. All routes meet at the New Haven Green.

As you approach the Green and converge with other explorers, the soundscape will expand, revealing more parts of the musical work. The path you choose and the people you meet along the way will change what you hear!

Once you arrive at the Green and settle in, the New Haven Symphony will take the stage at 7pm to perform a vibrant program honoring the voices and stories of our community.

To participate in the walk, you'll need the City of Floating Sounds app. The download link will be released 2 days prior to the event.

REGISTER on the Arts & Ideas website to receive the download link in your inbox. You'll also find details of the six walking routes there, so you can plan your journey in advance!

This event and the accompanying app are free of charge.
