Celebrate Connecticut's 4 Signers
The Huntington Homestead Museum invites you to celebrate Connecticut's four signers of the Declaration of Independence on the 250th anniversary of the vote affirming this foundational document.
Our day will begin at 11 AM with the raising of the Grand Union flag, the flag used in 1776. Kathryn Huntington, associate pastor of the Scotland Congregational Church, will lead us in a prayer of thanks, followed by a two-hour musical program featuring former State Troubadour Tom Callinan. We will start this portion of the program with the singing of "America the Beautiful," culminating in a unique fourth verse about our liberty! Tom will continue with a song he wrote about the life and times of Samuel Huntington.
Just before 1 PM, Scotland’s Poet Laureate, Susan Powers, will present a poem about Samuel’s achievements during his lifetime. At 1 PM, we will begin a program highlighting Connecticut’s four signers: Samuel Huntington, William Williams, Oliver Wolcott, and Roger Sherman. At the conclusion of the program and after hearing what was at stake if you were a signer, you will have a chance to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
We will end our program just before 2 PM with visitors reading the Declaration of Independence, followed by the blast of a cannon and the ringing of the Congregational Church’s bell 13 times—one for each of the original 13 colonies.
