Autumn Colors Limited
See the Litchfield Hills at their most colorful on the Naugatuck Railroad’s Autumn Colors Limited, a two-hour fall foliage excursion through the Naugatuck River Valley. It’s an easy, relaxed way to take in New England’s peak autumn scenery without ever getting behind the wheel.
The train runs along the southern end of the line, where the tracks follow the Naugatuck River and cross it several times. Each crossing opens up wide views of the water framed by red, orange, and gold leaves. A volunteer narrator shares the history of the railroad and the area, and points out sights along the way.
Partway through the trip, the train heads north of Thomaston Station and crosses the landmark Thomaston Dam, which overlooks the river valley from a high vantage point. It’s one of the best photo opportunities of the day.
Riders also get a 20-minute stop at Fascia’s Chocolates in Thomaston. You can tour the factory and pick up treats in the chocolate shop before boarding again. Please note that the chocolate factory stop may change without notice, depending on store hours and capacity.
