What is America 250 | Connecticut?
July 4th, 2026, will be the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The America 250 | CT Commission was established by Governor Lamont to help Connecticut celebrate this special milestone.
Since its inception, America 250 | Connecticut has sought to inspire grassroots efforts that promote inclusivity and belonging among Connecticut’s residents, from reflecting on the last 250 years to forging ahead toward a shared future. Each local community has its own unique story to tell and plays a distinctive role in the history, culture, and civics of Connecticut.
The America 250 | CT commission created four main themes to help guide participants in planning events and programs for the 250th celebration.
"Tell Inclusive Stories" invites organizations to discover and share stories that have often been overlooked or not told enough, highlighting the rich history of Connecticut.
"Power of Place" honors the diverse backgrounds and contributions of Connecticut’s communities before, during, and after the Revolution.
"Doing History" invites institutions to use the 250th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Connecticut’s role in shaping the nation—its people, important sites, and historical events.
Finally, "For the Common Good" encourages everyone to get involved in civic activities and continue working to build our communities, state, and country in line with the democratic principles outlined in our founding documents.
These themes make it possible to explore stories beyond the time of the Revolutionary War and inspire organizations to think about how the ideas in the Declaration of Independence have influenced our history.
With 200+ affiliate organizations and local planners in nearly all of Connecticut’s 169 cities and towns, there is an abundance of engaging commemorative events taking place around the state – now through July!
