Waterfalls in Fairfield County

Sheep Falls is a scenic, 3-foot punchbowl waterfall located in the northeast corner of the Wilton Town Forest (follow the Blue Trail). This dog-friendly, 2.9-mile loop with about 308 feet of elevation gain can be rugged, rocky, and narrow – sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Saugatuck Falls resides in one of Redding’s most popular scenic locales, widely known as Falls Hole – a huge woodland pool in the Saugatuck River with an overhanging cliff on one side and hemlock woods on the other. A network of trails reveals the beauty and diversity of the area, which also features two horseback trails.

Ambler Cascade (often called Ambler Gorge or Falls) is a beautiful unofficial waterfall located along the East Branch of Comstock Brook in Weston’s Devil’s Den Preserve. Managed by The Nature Conservancy, the 1,756-acre nature reserve is also of historical significance: archaeological evidence indicates human use of the area, mostly for hunting, as long as 5,000 years ago.

Valley Forge Falls is a small seasonal cascade in Weston in the Saugatuck watershed. To see the falls, you must walk to the bridge on Valley Forge Road and look 40 feet northward upstream.

Farmill River Falls is located in Farm Mill Park on the Stratford-Shelton town line, where you can view the river's three beautiful waterfalls as they cascade into tranquil pools below. Be sure to follow the path through stands of ancient trees and carpets of wildflowers; of historic interest are the two mill sites, several dams, and sluices. The effort required to explore this area is rewarded by the wild beauty and peace of this unique park.

Indian Well Falls, on the western bank of the Housatonic River in Shelton, runs through Indian Well State Park, named for the scenic waterfall and gorge. Its 15-foot plunge, wide sandy beach, and shaded picnic grove make it a perfect spot to spend a relaxing summer day. The blue-blazed Paugussett Trail traverses the park, which offers bass, perch, and catfish fishing, and the only public boat launch on the river.
