How You Can Help Connecticut Families During the Federal Shutdown
When Connecticut faces a challenge, we face it together.
That’s what makes us special: the way we look out for one another. Right now, thousands of our neighbors need that spirit more than ever.
What’s Happening
Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps low-income families buy groceries, has been temporarily halted. That means tens of thousands of Connecticut households who rely on these benefits may not receive their November food assistance. For families already stretching every dollar, this could mean the difference between a stocked pantry and an empty one.
What It Means for Connecticut Families
Across our state, the impact will be felt deeply — in kitchen tables, grocery aisles, and school lunchboxes. SNAP helps more than 360,000 Connecticut residents, including children, seniors, and veterans. Without that support, many families will face impossible choices between food, rent, and utilities. Local food banks and nonprofits, including CT Foodshare, are stepping up to meet this need.
However, they can’t do it alone. That’s where you come in.
How YOU Can Help
Now is the time for Connecticut’s “neighbors helping neighbors” spirit to shine. Every act of generosity makes a real difference. Here are three ways to help right now:
-
Donate to CT Foodshare
Your financial donation allows CT Foodshare to purchase and distribute food efficiently to families across the state. A single dollar can help provide two meals. Give today at CTFoodshare.org.
-
Volunteer Your Time
From sorting donations at a warehouse to helping at mobile food pantries, volunteers are essential to getting food where it’s needed most. Sign up to volunteer with CT Foodshare.
-
Donate Food Locally
You can also drop off nonperishable food at a local food pantry near you. To find one in your community, visit 211ct.org.
Together, We Can Make Sure No One Goes Hungry
The Village of Connecticut has always been a place where people care — where community isn’t just a word, it’s a way of life. As we navigate this uncertain time, let’s come together to make sure every family, in every corner of our state, has what they need. When we look out for one another, Connecticut is at its finest.
