This 62-room Victorian-era home is recognized as one of America’s earliest and most significant Second Empire style country estates. Experience its masterfully designed architecture on a guided tour, available Wednesday through Sunday. 

The Mark Twain House, Hartford 

This is one of Connecticut’s most iconic landmarks. It features intricate Victorian architecture and a dramatic interior that feels like stepping into a fantasy. Once home to the legendary author, the house now preserves Twain’s life and legacy as a Museum. Rumor has it the house is also haunted, with visitors reporting the smell of phantom cigar smoke, unexplained noises, and sightings of a mysterious woman dressed in white. Guided tours of the museum are available seven days a week. 

Roseland Cottage, Woodstock 

The cottage captures a gothic, storybook charm with its stained-glass windows and beautifully crafted interior. Its distinctive pink exterior makes it impossible to miss. Besides its enchanting appearance, the cottage is also recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Tours are offered Thursday through Sunday. 

Silas W. Robbins House, Old Wethersfield

This beautifully preserved Victorian home has been transformed into a bed and breakfast featuring five elegantly designed bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. It’s the perfect place to relax after exploring one of Connecticut’s historic towns.

While the witch trial of Regina Owens in Practical Magic is fictional, Connecticut is home to real stories of accused witches that predate the Salem Witch Trials by decades. Visit these historic sites to explore the state’s fascinating and often tragic history of Witchcraft accusations. 

• In Stratford,  you’ll find the Goody Bassett memorial, which honors Goody Bassett, a woman executed for witchcraft in 1651. While her story reflects on a time marked by fear and suspicion, her memorial allows visitors a chance to learn about one of Connecticut’s earliest witch trials. 
•  The Windsor Town Green marks the site of one of Connecticut’s earliest witch trials and honors Alse Young and Lydia Gilbert, two women executed for witchcraft between 1647 and 1654. Today, at this historic landmark, visitors will see commemorative bricks dedicated to the women and can reflect on the real events that helped shape centuries of New England witch lore. 
• The Goody Knapp Memorial in Bridgeport commemorates Knapp, who was executed for witchcraft in 1653. Visitors can take a moment to remember her story while exploring the history that contributed to New England’s reputation for mystery, folklore, and the supernatural.
• The Mary Barnes memorial in Hartford honors Barnes, who was executed for witchcraft in 1663 in nearby Farmington.
