Cultural District of New London
New London was named the state’s third Cultural District in May 2022 and the first along the shoreline and in Southeastern Connecticut. A small city nestled between the Thames River and Long Island Sound, New London offers a dynamic mix of history, arts, culture, shopping, dining, and nightlife.
The city boasts a vibrant independent arts and music community that creates a lively atmosphere in its very walkable downtown, accessible by rail and ferry. The district hosts an eclectic mix of art galleries and shops, with large-scale murals adorning buildings throughout. The Garde Arts Center presents touring musical and theater productions as well as popular film series in a historic former movie palace. Just minutes outside of downtown, the Lyman Allyn is a world-class art museum offering both historic and contemporary exhibitions, with a new outdoor park in development.
New London also hosts significant historic sites, including the Hempstead Houses, U.S. Custom House Maritime Museum, Monte Cristo Cottage, and Shaw Mansion, and will soon be home to the U.S. Coast Guard Museum. Fort Trumbull State Park, the beautiful Ocean Beach Park, and Connecticut College's Arboretum are a short drive from downtown, offering history, a sugar-sand beach, and a shady reprieve, respectively.
Each year, New London hosts a full season of free, popular all-ages events, including SailFest with its massive fireworks display over the Thames, the CT Maritime Heritage Festival featuring an exciting array of sea vessels, the New London Irish Parade, Make Music Day each June, and the New London Arts Stroll, as well as regular art markets, salsa dance socials, and other outdoor events.
